Regalia GOLD 90-95 pts

This was matured for six months in vats lined with white gold. Smells of glass, sand and grain. The palate entry is sweet, waxy and quite delicious; at midpalate there’s a thrust of minerals, wheat and a leanness that’s crisp, acidic and very refreshing.

Regalia 90-95 pts
Aromas of breakfast cereal, slate, charcoal and wet grass. The palate entry is supple and smoky sweet, thick in texture and altogether delightful; midpalate highlights the ashy sweetness. Finishes robustly and with panache.

Appearance: Crystal clear, no sediment whatsoever. Limpid shining pool in the glass. On swirling, it leaves a thin clear coat on the inside of the glass with long thin legs. Wonderful bright appearance.

First Impression: Alcohol and grain, plump, almost creamy texture to the smell. No trace of off-notes, or the smell of rubbing alcohol that many other vodkas suffer from. A carefully done distillation.

Taste: Plump grain body glide past the tongue nipping at it with the alcohol edge and nice lingering finish. Slight sweetness with the higher notes from a good wheat grain. Slightly oily and wonderfully thick body but not too heavy- this is the kind of body that cheaper vodkas strive for by doping with sugar, glycerin, or vanilla but this vodka comes by it honestly. Wonderful hard mineral water taste and body in this vodka -real Russian well water. I suspect this is the distillery (or one of them) that the old Stolichnaya came from- it had the same wonderful water profile- nowadays Stoli tastes like it was made from rain or distilled water - severely lacking character and depth in my opinion. This on the other hand tastes and feels like real Russian vodka

Drinks: Already very clean to start with, chilling it down makes it even more smooth. Excellent temperature, maybe too good cold. Martini* was excellent (with olive or twist). All the other drinks benefited from the minerally taste and smoothness of this vodka. It stands out more than most without overwhelming the drink.

Final Thoughts: One of the few vodkas that are actually worth paying over $25 for. Less money than either Stoli or the Avian Fashion Victim Vodka, with more depth and complexity.

Regalia is crystal clear with a subtle bouquet of sweet grain and an oily textured, lightweight body. The vodka passes over the palate softly, raising little heat in the process. The dry flavors of cereal and anise linger well into the protracted finish. A solid, top-shelf performer.

AIKO LLC, a company in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, has an interesting portfolio of imported beers, spirits, and wines, which you can peek at here. Among them is a terrific vodka from Russia. REGALIA, AIKO LLC declares, "is produced by the state-controlled (read: strict adherence to the highest standards of quality) distillery of Yaroslavl, an ancient city located in close proximity of Moscow." Well, we're not so sure that "state owned" necesitates "good," but in this case, it has.

This vodka is superb. It is astonishingly smooth. It is nearly tasteless, so those who adore KETEL ONE will really dig this vodka. The packaging of this vodka is quite expressive, bordering on the baroque (See the crown/orb like bottle here. Superb. (Rating****3/4)
